About Me

I am Jaka Šubic,...

...born in 1982, I come from Žiri, at the end of the picturesque Poljanska Valley. I now live in Ljubljana and work as a lawyer at one of the law firms in Slovenia. So I am a lawyer, technology enthusiast, stubborn individualist, cautious observer of our time and occasional apprentice of art who feels that not everything has yet been said. With the help of personal assistance I live a completely ordinary and independent life in my Ljubljana apartment.
I have a regular job, pursue hobbies, exercise, manage my household, and I am an uncle, brother, friend and much more.

Life did not give me an easy start. Because I was born prematurely and there were complications during delivery, it soon became clear that my path would include many challenges. I was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy, which can involve impairments of very different kinds and degrees. It results from damage to the developing brain. Its effects cannot be predicted precisely, but it is not a progressive disease that inevitably becomes worse. Therapy and sustained effort can improve some aspects of the condition.

My parents gave me a beautiful childhood, through which I travelled together with my brother and sister. As the children of warm-hearted educator Mira and resourceful master carpenter Marjan, we had many opportunities for all kinds of mischief and for discovering the beauty of country life. Sadly, we lost our parents far too early.

My family did not overemphasize my impairment; they focused on what I could do and encouraged it as much as possible. We all made progress together, and that is why I know despair does not help. Life continued through great challenges, trials and difficulties. There was nothing left but to try to do everything as well as I could.

Throughout my life, both in childhood and later, computing and related technology have accompanied me. They allow me, despite my impairment, to be active in many areas and to discover possibilities that might otherwise be harder for me to reach. For me, computing and technology in general are a window to the world: they made writing and expression, study and work, as well as entertainment and free time possible. That is why my “home laboratory” gives me special joy, a place where I can marvel at human ingenuity and where my possibilities feel almost unlimited.

As a lawyer and a person with a mobility impairment, I encounter many personal challenges and see the difficulties faced by other disabled people who also strive to live full lives. I therefore work both to protect my own health and well-being and to improve the position of vulnerable people who might otherwise be left without support.

Welcome to my personal website. With the help of accessible technology, I share a few personal thoughts on different subjects and invite you to join the discussion. This may be only a small contribution among many opinions and solutions, but every thoughtful contribution has value.
